The Field Notes

Short dispatches between drops.

Episodes are long; the world keeps moving. Field Notes are 600-word dispatches we publish between major episode drops — what changed in a story we already covered, what we got wrong, what's developing. Always one chart. Always sourced. Always short.

Field Note № 10 · Evening Close 11 Jun 2026 9 min · what the cameras missed

A second day of strikes closed the strait, and the cameras stayed at sea. One chokepoint priced the whole board.

Thursday's loud pictures were both war at sea: US forces sank an Iranian vessel and Iran declared the Strait of Hormuz closed (T01, gravity 90, correctly scored). Underneath, the same shock ran through five quieter rows. Producer prices posted their largest annual gain since 2022, with goods up 2.8% in a single month, a record (T04, 78), the clearest "cameras missed" item of the day. The Supreme Court let an opinion day pass without Trump v. Cook, deferring the Fed-firing case into a two-day term-end jam (T03, 80). Jobless claims hit a four-month high at 229k (T09, 48), the recession tripwire ticking against the inflation story. And Section 702 ran out of road, failing in both chambers (T02, 84), the one mechanism story that, two days after Infera flagged it as buried, finally broke through. The market shrugged at all of it: the S&P closed up 0.21%. Scaffolds fired 3 for 3, no misses, and for the first time this week no BREAKING-class event escaped the board.

The Open Record Order for June 11, the truce tested at sea.

Thursday's confirmed board, A/B tested on design and never on facts. The anchor wall: the Iran re-escalation watch at the cycle's ceiling after the June 10 tanker engagement (T01, 90, REPORTED/FACT), Section 702's last clean day before the Friday lapse (84, FACT/WATCH), a SCOTUS opinion day with 23 cases and 3 days left (80, FACT/WATCH), the PPI print asking how much more inflation is coming (78, FACT/WATCH), and a defense markup where war policy becomes line items (66, FACT). New today: the tanker engagement, the opinion-math compression, and Berks County going quiet, with its principal board cancelled and its election board removed the same day. Same board in two opposite lights: a clockwork night Orrery and a pressed-specimen Herbarium.

Field Note № 11 · Public Inspection 10 Jun 2026 9 min · the reading room · updated 06.12

Tomorrow's law sat on a public table all day Wednesday. Some of it was effective on arrival.

Every weekday at 8:45 AM, the documents that publish the next morning go on the Federal Register's Public Inspection desk, free and readable by anyone. Wednesday's stack held 144 documents: a final rule removing the disparate-impact standard from transportation civil rights (effective on publication, no advance comment), an interim final rule putting a new fee schedule on immigration court (live before its comment window opens), and an SBA proposal to make individually owned 8(a) firms prove social disadvantage case by case, the one item with a real lever attached, docket SBA-2026-0133, comments due July 13. All of it printed Thursday morning, the same hour the Supreme Court handed down opinions. Publication-day postscript included: 144 of 144 published, zero withdrawals, the two sealed rules effective the day they arrived. Updated June 12 with the open-windows ledger: five dockets, five deadlines, a CFTC move on prediction markets, and a lapse day on which nothing printed.

Field Note № 09 · Evening Close 9 Jun 2026 8 min · the markets close

At the open the market bought the ceasefire. By the close it took the relief back.

Tuesday split in two. In the morning a reported Iran ceasefire dropped oil hard and lifted stocks about half a percent. By the bell the equity relief was gone: the S&P closed down 0.26% at 7,386.65 and the Nasdaq down 0.97% at 25,678.82, while oil kept its fall. The divergence is the signal. Oil prices the immediate fear, a closed Strait of Hormuz, and that fear eased. Stocks price durable confidence, and the things that would buy it stayed parked all day: the War Powers vote with no Senate date (T05), the $24B frozen-asset term with no legal instrument (T06), and a deal still "two to three days" away. The rally faded because the paperwork that would justify it does not exist yet. Underneath, Section 702 slid to three days from lapse, jammed by a three-way deadlock (T02). The Monday caution about a peace that is announced, not signed, was confirmed by the tape inside a single session.

The Open Record Order for June 10, one shock read three ways.

CPI day. Wednesday's confirmed board, A/B tested on design and never on facts. The anchor wall: the May CPI print at 8:30 AM (82, FACT/REPORTED) whose energy line is priced by the live Hormuz blockade (T02, 80, REPORTED), the Section 702 cliff now two days out (72, FACT), the DoD 1260H China designation that risks being buried under a hot print (66, FACT/WATCH), and the closed SASC NDAA markup wrap (64, FACT). New today: the energy theme runs clean across two layers of government, with the PA PUC Peoples Gas hearing and the EIA petroleum report joining the CPI energy line. Same board in two opposite lights: a molten Foundry and a cold Tide Chart.

The Open Record Order for June 9, rendered two ways.

Tuesday's confirmed board, A/B tested on design and never on facts. The anchor wall: the Iran ceasefire push (84, REPORTED), the Section 702 cliff three days out (70, FACT), the closed-door NDAA markup that loses the 2:30 PM split-screen to live Gulf diplomacy (64, FACT), and the three Federal Register rules that publish with no hearing and no camera. Same board in two opposite lights: a hand-inked Archival Ledger and a kinetic Signal Scope.

Two loud stories owned the day. Three rules used the noise.

On June 9 the cameras split between a ceasefire rally that dropped oil below ninety dollars and National Guard troops moving toward Los Angeles. Underneath both, a surveillance law slid to three days from lapse, a $1.5 trillion defense bill was marked up behind a closed door, and three federal rules published with almost no coverage. One of them was the quiet paper twin of the immigration story on every screen. A museum walkthrough of what moves under the noise, with the day we never put on the board shown plainly.

A public line just opened a lane you can pay to skip.

On June 9 the State Department published a forgettable fee rule: pay 750 dollars to jump to the front of the visa appointment line at busy posts, framed around the World Cup and the LA Olympics. A museum walkthrough of how a quiet Burden Shift works, an interactive queue you can reorder yourself, the sunset date nobody quotes, and the comment window that is open until July 9. Both sides argued honestly; the lever handed to you.

A ceasefire the markets believed before anyone signed it.

On Monday a social-media post and an Iranian statement moved oil and stocks as if the war were over, while a surveillance law four days from lapsing and a war-powers vote with no date sat in the shade. A museum walkthrough of June 8: the gap between a thing announced and a thing done, the §702 countdown, and the announcement that did double duty. Run early, before the close; seams shown.

The pending notification just arrived.

The forward advance on № 04. Overnight, CENTCOM confirmed a 90-target strike on Kharg Island, naval mine storage first, and Iran answered with ballistic missiles at Kuwait and Bahrain plus a threat to close the strait. Meanwhile the §702 cliff turns out to be slower than advertised, which changes the politics. A corrections ledger, a declassify-it-yourself case file, and a departure board for the ten days when everything lands at once: the oil reopen, CPI, the lapse, the runoff, and the Fed.

The loudest story is standing in front of the one that matters.

On the day $1.3 trillion burned off the chip sector, the Senate quietly walked warrantless surveillance powers toward a June 12 cliff, and almost nobody watched. A museum-style walkthrough of Friday, June 5: five exhibits and one causal chain connecting the drones, the jobs beat, the yields, the selloff, and the vote it buried.
